As I was writing, it occurred to me that much pain is endured by dissociative persons as they courageously attend healing conferences in the Christian arena. I recently attended a conference featuring a world renowned speaker. During one of the presentations, numerous comments were made referring to themselves as acting as a “multiple” or being a “multiple personality”. The large crowd howled and laughed along with the comments.

I was aware of a number of severely fractured, dissociated or multiple people in attendance. I found myself scanning the audience to find them and to see how they were doing. I offered up prayers of strength and consolation for them and for God to forgive the obvious insensitivity. I also asked the Holy Spirit to “shut up” the either ignorant or just plain cruel behavior of the other people, especially the speaker.

The second time I looked for one individual, their seat was empty. I am sure the pain was great. I was also very proud of that person for removing themselves from verbal and emotional abuse.

I pray that all of you will be much more alert to the insensitivities and cruelties in our “loving Christian midst” and be courageous to speak up in such a situation in order to stop it.

I seriously considered intervening at the time. Those who know me well realize that it is within my realm of possibility. I did not for only one reason: perhaps the speaker really is dissociative…it actually appeared as though it could be to these trained observer’s eyes. Was the speaker just under extreme stress and alters were coming out to help? Was it the speaker’s way of trying to “normalize” or inform the general population of the condition’s existence and that anyone can have it?

I am mentally working on a letter of concern, education and offering help. When I get the green light from ABBA, I will post it to the speaker.
